電影《三姊妹》以紀錄片的形式講述了在雲南某個村莊裡的三個姐妹生活的故事。談及為何會關注這三個女孩，王兵表示他在2009年拍攝完成《夾邊溝》後，到雲南去拜祭已故的作家朋友，在看望完其母親回程的路上，他偶然遇到了這三個孩子，由於飢餓，王兵到三個女孩家裡吃飯，老大英英為他燒了土豆，這一舉動感動了王兵。

而後在2010年有製片人提出要王兵拍攝一部電影，三個小女孩的形象就出現在了他的腦海裡。
