湖南的湘西南的位置，當地經濟不活躍，百姓要嘛出去打工，要嘛上山開礦。由於礦難不斷，政府雖努力整頓和規範，但還是不少人非法開採。礦工下礦井常不注意防護，多年後，很多礦工得了塵肺病。本片從2010年開始拍攝，直至2018年，攝製週期近十年，直至跟拍的塵肺病主人公趙品鳳去世，留下年幼的子女和弱智的妻子，他們的生活何去何從。
