在二次大戰期間的南大西洋，美國驅逐艦海恩斯號用雷達追蹤到德國潛艇訊號，於是穆勒艦長（羅伯特.米徹姆飾）便展開追擊。穆勒原擔任貨輪船長，因被魚雷擊沉而轉任海恩斯號的艦長，船上多是新兵。德國史登堡艦長（克德.朱爾吉斯飾）亦是船艦作戰好手，奉命與奇襲艦會合並取回英國密碼，故一直堅守航線，卻遭穆勒識破尾隨而來。穆勒深怕彈援不中而反遭德國艦隊圍擊，便每小時以深水炸彈轟擊以待援兵趕來。

德國潛艇被逼到深海海牀以便甩脫追擊，由於美艦不斷轟擊使德軍船員受不了，史艦長以進行曲鼓舞士氣，這樣一來更被美軍聲納探知予以轟擊。海恩斯號也受重創，穆勒假裝棄船引誘德潛艇浮出海面，以便轟擊潛艇使兩艦相撞……
