二戰期間，戰爭與死亡的陰雲籠罩整個歐洲，無一國家倖免。 居住在匈牙利的14歲猶太青年卡維（Marcell Nagy 飾），在乘車探望父親的路上被納粹軍人攔下，隨後被送往集中營。在這個非人的所在，死亡、疾病、虐待、恐懼時刻威脅著他們的生命。聽取了好友凱爾泰斯的建議，卡維發誓無論如何也要活著走出這個人間地獄…… 本片根據2002年度諾貝爾獲獎作家伊姆雷•凱爾泰茲（Imre Kertész）的同名小說改編，並榮獲2005年波蘭Camerimage電影節金蛙獎和2005年哥本哈根國際電影節最佳攝影獎。
